by Michael David SmithNik Lentz celebrates his win over Andre Winner at UFC 118.The first televised fight of Saturday night's UFC 118 card was not a particularly entertaining one, as Nik Lentz beat Andre Winner in a dull unanimous decision that left the fans booing.

The first round was a positional battle, with Lentz trying to take Winner down and Winner trying to keep the fight standing. In general Lentz was in control, either on the ground or clinching against the cage, although the best strikes were landed by Winner, including a couple of hard punches near the end of the round that might have been enough to win the round on the judges' scorecards.

by Michael David SmithSeven months after making his mixed martial arts debut, former NFL star Herschel Walker says he hasn't lost any of his enthusiasm for MMA and will be back in the cage fighting for Strikeforce this year.

"I have a little one, so my number one focus is my child, but after that my focus is on fighting," Walker told MMAFighting.com. "I'm training at AKA with some of the best trainers and some of the best fighters and as I get closer I'm trusting them to make the decision to tell me when I'm ready for my next fight. This is a very serious, very tough sport and I want them to tell me when they think I'm ready."

When I am out for a freeride session I actually use the Severne NCX or the NCX pro in 8,0. It´s a sail, which feels extremely light, but gives you enough power, when the wind drops and a lot of control, when the wind picks up. You should have a try! Chris

by Michael David SmithDemian Maia returned to the Octagon for the first time since being humiliated by Anderson Silva in April, defeating Mario Miranda by unanimous decision at UFC 118.

It wasn't a pretty fight, but it was a fight that Maia won handily, winning all three rounds on all three judges' cards.

Early in the fight Maia took Miranda to the ground and proceeded to methodically advance his position and get Miranda's back. Maia is one of the best Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in the world, and it seemed just a matter of time before Maia would win by submission. But Miranda did a nice job of wriggling free and standing back up after a couple minutes of Maia controlling him. The rest of the round was fought standing up without either fighter doing much damage, but Maia clearly won the round because he controlled the action on the ground.

MMA is on the rise, but it's not free from the affects of a lousy economy. UFC finally landing in Boston is a huge coup for the sport, but even a city hungry for fighting hasn't opened its wallets without some hesitation. Dan Duggan from the Boston Herald reports that UFC 118 needs a late push to sellout:

Tickets went on sale June 25 and as of last weekend about 11,000 tickets had been sold. The Garden’s capacity for the event will be 15,500.

UFC president Dana White, a Boston-native is surprised:

"I was shocked that we didn’t sell out,” White told the Herald Monday. "Everybody is telling me that things are rough back there." [...]

"We think it’s going to sell out," White said. "I think we’re like a couple thousand away from it. But when we get down to a thousand, we consider that a sell out. We’ll do that from walkup (sales)."

White is happy with the way the event has been marketed.

"Everything is great," White said. "The fight card, the lead-up and now going there is all good stuff."

He's probably got good reason to be confident that the card will sell out. The Boston media showed up in force Wednesday to cover the UFC 118 prefight press conference. Papers like the Herald and Boston Globe still have muscle in New England.

by Michael David SmithIn a classic fight for the Bellator bantamweight title, Joe Warren was beaten senseless for five minutes in the first round against Joe Soto, only to storm back and knock Soto out just 33 seconds into the second round.

It was one of the fights of the year, and a fight that showed that Warren, a world-class wrestler, also has an incredible chin and powerful striking.

"I had a bad first round," Warren said afterward. "I took a deep breath, got my focus back and pushed hard. You can't stop me. I'm the baddest man on the planet."

UFC fighter Spencer Fisher was arrested in Bettendorf, Iowa, for interfering with an official's duties. What does that mean? Read on:

"Spencer went to pick up his daughters from school, and he doubled parked because there were no other parking spaces available," [Fisher's manager Mickey] Dubberly stated in an email to MMAjunkie.com. "The police asked Spencer to move his car, and Spencer stated he would only be a second. The police asked him again to move his car, and Spencer kept proceeding to pick up his daughters from school."

We've all been there, Spencer. Picking up my nephew from school requires military precision, and there is always one person who takes the job of running the parking line too seriously. Unfortunately for Fisher, that person was a cop with the power to arrest.

Fisher's management group expects that the charges will be dropped, which is good considering Fisher is preparing for a bout with newcomer Kurt Warburton at UFC 120.
